The Faculty of Hospitality at SEGi College Sarawak recently organised an educational visit to The Waterfront Hotel Kuching, allowing 48 students from the Diploma in Hotel Management, Diploma in Tourism Management, and Diploma in Culinary Arts to gain practical experience in the hospitality industry. The study visit, which took place from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on 2 March 2023, also aimed to teach students how to plan and organise events outside of the classroom.
During the study visit, students were given a tour of the hotel’s various amenities, including dining establishments, meeting rooms, and guest suites, as well as a briefing on the hotel’s history, various room types, and staff facilities from Ms. Alpha, the Human Resource Manager. Alpha also chose a few students for interviews about their decision to work in the hospitality industry. A passion for cooking and a desire to follow in the footsteps of family members who work in the hotel industry were among the responses.
The study visit gave students firsthand knowledge of how a hospitality industry organisation operates, allowing them to gain insights and knowledge for their future careers. The educational trip provided students with an excellent opportunity to gain practical skills and knowledge of the hospitality industry, which is an important part of the Sarawak economy.
The student visited the dining establishment, meeting space, and the management briefed the student along the trip on the “Café Via Mare” outlet, various types of function rooms, and the guest amenities includes swimming pools and a gym. The student also had the chance to look at the club lounge, various suite types, including the ‘Nisa Addina Suite’ and ‘Brooke’s Loft Suite’ as well as the hotel rooftop. There is just one unique suite, known as the ‘Miao Suite’ located in the Waterfront Hotel Kuching. The name ‘Miao Suite’ was given to this room since it is quite unique and has an orange cat artwork all around it.
SEGi College Sarawak’s Faculty of Hospitality has been providing quality education and training to students interested in the hospitality industry. Sarawak received 5.7 million visitors in 2021, according to the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, with tourism revenue totaling RM11.8 billion. Because of the growing tourism industry in Sarawak, courses like those offered by the Faculty of Hospitality at SEGi College Sarawak are essential for those interested in pursuing a career in the field.
The successful study visit to The Waterfront Hotel Kuching was undoubtedly a valuable learning experience for the students who took part.
