SEGi College Sarawak students’ hands-on learning: Women’s cancer detection

On 21 February 2023, SEGi College Sarawak Diploma in Healthcare students attended a cancer awareness talk for women organised by Klinik Nur Sejahtera Kuching in collaboration with the Student’s Experience Office and Faculty of Allied Health Sciences. The goal of the presentation was to raise awareness about the importance of early detection of women’s cancers, as well as the signs and symptoms to look out for.

The two main cancers discussed during the talk were breast and cervical cancer, and students were able to distinguish between normal and abnormal organ structures. There was also discussion of risk factors, signs and symptoms, treatments, and preventions. The students actively participated in the Q&A session, asking pertinent questions about breast and cervical cancer.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases diagnosed in 2020. Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide, accounting for approximately 604,000 new cases in 2020.

Following the sharing sessions, students had the opportunity to examine a breast mannequin to distinguish between breast lumps and cysts and to learn the proper way to detect abnormal breast growth. The hands-on session provided an excellent learning opportunity for the students.

This collaboration project is part of SEGi College Sarawak’s commitment to providing high-quality education and providing future healthcare providers with the knowledge and skills they need to better serve the community. In the coming days, the college intends to invite more industry speakers for informative talks.
