SEGi College Sarawak has named Ms. Christine Rika as the recipient of the Best Lecturer Award 2020. As a Biotechnology Master’s Degree holder and an allied health lecturer, Ms. Christine received the recognition based on peer evaluation.
Being recognized as one of the best lecturers of the year, Ms. Christine attributes her colleagues who are more experienced in teaching to help her become a better teacher. “I learn from my colleagues who gave me a lot of ideas and guidance in teaching. I can’t take credit for the award because they are performing better.”
Ms. Christine joined SEGi in March 2019, she was given the responsibilities to teach allied health subjects, which is not directly related to her education credentials. However, she is able to adapt to the transition with her keen interest in education and perseverance in learning.
COVID-19 pandemic that strikes our country this year has brought challenges to all of us. In these most challenging times for both lecturers and students, Ms. Christine embodies empathy in her teaching by putting herself in her students’ shoes, which allows her to understand her students’ situation and inspires her to improve her teaching.
According to Ms. Christine, being a reflective practitioner is one of the steps to enable her to improve her teaching. “I will ask for feedback from the students to check whether they understand the lesson. Also, I always encourage them to ask questions in the class and try my best to help them in understanding the lesson better”.
This young lady is endearingly positive. “I believe that education can change someone’s life. Whatever you do, always remember that you are doing it for your family and your future. Finish what you have started and don’t stop it halfway.” ent.
