SEGi, renowned for its commitment to providing comprehensive education, recently organised an enlightening visit to the esteemed Federal Court of Malaysia. 30 law students accompanied by four lecturers from SEGi’s Faculty of Law embarked on a transformative journey to the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya.
The visit aimed to deepen the students’ legal acumen and practical understanding by offering them a firsthand experience of the intricacies of legal practice and procedure. Guided by Siti Nadhirah Binti Muhamad Wazir, the Senior Assistant Registrar of the Federal Court, the students explored the rich heritage and history that the court represents.
Established in 1957 following Malaya’s declaration of independence, the Federal Court has played a pivotal role in shaping Malaysia’s legal evolution. Over the years, it has witnessed substantial judicial progress, reflecting the growth of Malaysia as a sovereign nation. The name changes from the Supreme Court to the Federal Court in 1994 not only marked a semantic shift but also symbolized the culmination of decades of judicial development.
During the visit, the students had the opportunity to witness live court proceedings, which breathed life into their legal studies. This invaluable experience provided insights into the dynamics of legal arguments, statutory application, and the art of persuasion – aspects that textbooks alone cannot convey. Witnessing real-time legal arguments equipped the students with critical evaluation skills and a deeper comprehension of the complexities of the judicial process.
In addition to observing court proceedings, the students explored the court’s library, an invaluable resource for legal wisdom. They immersed themselves in precedent-setting cases, scholarly commentaries, and historical legal treatises. A highlight of the visit was Siti Nadhirah’s explanation about YAA Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, the Chief Justice of Malaysia. As the custodian of justice and head of the Federal Court, her role carries profound responsibility. Introducing the Chief Justice not only put a face to Malaysia’s highest judicial authority but also provided students with a glimpse into her immense influence in guiding the nation’s legal landscape.
This expedition goes beyond mere observation and exploration; it bridges theoretical constructs with practical realities. The visit cultivates analytical thinking, strategic legal planning, and the art of constructing coherent legal arguments.
