The calamitous effects of COVID-19 pandemic spared no one globally, from affecting the health of the people to economic downturns affecting millions of people, including exerting immense stress on students. Many were hoping that the situation will be back to normal soon and that the virus will be contained successfully in a short period of time, however that is clearly not the case as there seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel at the time being. Whilst we are still hopeful for a vaccine to be discovered and tested soon, the number of mental health issues among public are rising at an alarming level and the number of suicide cases, especially among youths are also seemingly increasing. Even with CMCO in effect throughout the country, this never stop the psychology team from SEGi College Penang to reach out and engage with school students to help them in any possible way during this dire period.
The Workshop “Your attitude…Your Life” was conducted on November 25th, 2020. Due to the pandemic of Covid-19 and schools nationwide being ordered to close, this workshop was conducted via Google Team. A total of 36 students from Heng Ee High School participated in this workshop. We would like to convey our gratitude to the PRS society (Kelab Pembimbing Rakan Sebaya) of Heng Ee High School who gave us the chance to conduct this workshop for their students.
The main purpose of this workshop was to share on how one’s attitude will affect their learning behavior. Throughout this workshop, we shared the importance of learning as well as let the students understand the real goals of learning. Learning not only refers to academic learning but “learning” occur throughout our life. For example, we can learn by reading a newspaper or watching a news broadcast, talking with friend, travelling and exploring.
Besides that, different learning styles was also introduced in this workshop and short questionnaire was given to the students for them to know and understand their own learning style. Last but not least, some tips on how to learn effectively through online learning was presented in this workshop. Students we were highly engaged during this whole workshop and we believed they have learned many new and valuable things that will make it much easier for them to face the new normal of online learning, and hopefully is able to reduce their stress level.
