Tapping into the Islamic Tourism market

On 22 June to 23 June 2022, a group of students from SEGi College Penang’s Events and Convention Management class and their lecturersΒ  joined the Islamic Tourism Entrepreneurship and Leadership Seminar organised by the Islamic Tourism Centre (ITC).

This is the first seminar of its kind post-pandemic, aimed at attracting youths, entrepreneurs and tourism-industry players to venture into the growing and potentially profitable field of Islamic tourism. With Muslim-travel spending expected to reach USD225 billion by 2028, the Muslim travel sector is a segment of tourism with tremendous potential for growth.

It was an honour for SEGi College Penang to be the only college in Penang to be invited to join this two-day seminar which featured a line-up of experienced and inspiring industry players in halal and Islamic Tourism who talked about leadership, funding, halal standards, as well as economic and entrepreneurial opportunities, among other things. The speakers were from Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), Malaysia Association of Wellness Trainers (MAWT), and Perbadanan Nasional Berhad (PERNAS).

This very informative seminar stressed the importance of understanding the needs of Muslim millennial travellers, how to accommodate them at travel destinations, as well as their interactions with local cultures in Penang, without compromising their faith-based needs. The increase in statistics of the potential buying power of and continuing growing number of Muslim travellers hopefully give an awareness to the students to cater for this segment.
