Students taking the Fundamentals of Cookery at SEGi College Penang visited Dandy Restaurant in Bayan Lepas, accompanied by their chef lecturer, Mr Muhammad Yazid. The purpose of the visit was to provide the students with the opportunity to learn about restaurant services.
The students got the opportunity to observe how the server greets guests at the table, asks questions to understand dietary restrictions, recommends dishes based on customer preferences, and responds to requests in a timely and professional manner. They also learned about the importance of body language and tone of voice to create a positive dining experience for guests.
They learned that managing a restaurant is also about teamwork and time management. They discovered that the kitchen being a fast-paced and volatile environment, every team member is responsible for ensuring that dishes are prepared and served in a timely manner.
Observing the chefs and kitchen staff as they worked together to manage multiple orders simultaneously, the students understood the importance of organisation and collaboration. Additionally, the visit allowed them to realise just how important customer service is for a complete dining experience.
This visit was a thoroughly fun and inspiring lesson for the students, who were invigorated with newfound enthusiasm for their studies and an added eagerness to graduate and go out into the working world.
