Community festivals such as the Chinese New Year are wonderful learning experiences for students. One such example is when SEGi College Penang’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management took an educational trip to Penang’s Chinese New Year Miao Hui 2023 on 28 January.
In Penang, the highlight of the Chinese New Year is the Miao Hui, first held in 1999, which was the Year of the Rabbit. The Miao Hui returned to its physical form this year, bringing life back to the Penang heritage area. The students got the opportunity to learn about the history of Penang, the Chinese clans, Chinese traditional dress, Chinese herbal medicine, and Chinese zodiac folklore.
They gained a deeper knowledge of Penang’s heritage and also learned to apply the theories of event management learned in the classroom. SEGi College Penang’s School of Hospitality and Tourism Management turns cultural celebrations into learning moments for our students to better understand other cultures and become global citizens. We believe that students learn best when they can see, hear, and experience things first-hand.
