Jumping into the Year of the Rabbit: SEGi College Penang’s Chinese New Year Bash

Gong Xi Fa Cai! At SEGi College Penang, the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit jumped into 2023 with a bang. The Chinese New Year is an important cultural event that is looked forward to by many. It is a time of peace, prosperity, and long life.

On 2 February 2023, SEGi College Penang kicked off the celebrations with a big party that was full of fun things to do. The event really showed how rich Chinese culture is by having the famous Lion Dance, firecrackers, Lou Sang, and a delicious lunch, which made it a day to remember.

Staff, students, and guests signed up at the SEGi College Penang Main Building Lobby at 10 a.m. for the party. Everyone was getting ready for the party that was about to start, and you could feel the excitement in the air.

Eight loud firecrackers went off at 11 a.m. to mark the start of the event. As soon as the fireworks were over, our Principal, Cheah Gaik Chiam, invited the lions into the Main Lobby for the Lion Dance. The loud beating of the drums and the Lion’s amazing dance moves were a sight to see and got everyone’s attention.

As the Lion Dance ceremony came to an end, the Lions gave mandarin oranges to staff and students as good luck charms. As the Lions gave the participants their good luck gifts, they couldn’t help but feel happy and excited.

At 1 p.m., the staff gathered at Wisma Sri Pinang II for a legendary photo session with the Lions. This event was a great chance for staff members to show how much they love Chinese culture.

Next came the long-awaited lunch and a traditional Chinese New Year dish called Lou Sang. The SRC set up a music band for the event, and Daniel Wong from Student Experience kept everyone entertained by singing Chinese New Year songs. Our principal joined in and sang, which made the room even more fun.

The best part of the day was when our principal gave our staff members Ang Pow packets and mandarin oranges. They cheered and were very happy. At 2:30 p.m., the lunch was over, and everyone went back to work with a better mood.

Overall, the Chinese New Year party at SEGi College Penang was a huge success that made everyone there happy and laugh. It was a fun, exciting, and culturally important day, and we can’t wait to do it again next year.
