Penang Island have approximately 10,000 stray dogs currently, a figure that has grown over time. The advent of stray dogs is caused by their owner abandoning them, while others are the offspring of those abandoned.
The number of strays continues to rise, despite government and non-governmental organisations’ efforts to reduce the number.
A group of SEGi College students from the School of Information Technology, School of Hospitality and Management, and School of Business collaborated with the Penang Animal Welfare Society (4PAWS) in Teluk Bahang, Penang, on this project.
The project involved organising an event to benefit a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) such as 4PAWS. The group began working on the project after their school approved their proposal. A short documentary film about the surroundings of the animal shelter, with volunteers from the shelter and an interview with Madam Barbara, the organiser of 4PAWS was taken. The footage was also made available on their website.
The students organised a fundraising drive to provide aid to the organisation. This project’s main goal is to create public awareness about the problems and suffering that stray animals face. Students from our campus gained valuable experience, created awareness, and at the same time, successfully aided the Penang Animal Welfare Society.
