In a proactive initiative to address critical mental health issues, the School of Psychology at SEGi organised an insightful online lecture on September 26, 2023, under the banner “Okay, BUT NOT OKAY.” The focus of the lecture was on “Smiling Depression: Hidden Struggles Behind the Smiles.”
The distinguished speaker for the event was Ms. Thevamalar, a registered counsellor and lecturer in the Department of Psychology. Guiding the session as the moderator was Shama Jannatul Afrin, a second-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at SEGi.
The primary objective of the talk was to raise awareness about critical mental health issues, particularly the concept of “Smiling Depression” where individuals grapple with internal struggles despite outward appearances of happiness. Ms. Thevamalar provided valuable insights into identifying the hidden challenges behind constant smiles and discussed ways in which the community can support those silently suffering.
Over 100 participants actively engaged in the online session, joining through both Zoom and Facebook Live platforms. The lecture not only served as an informative discourse but also provided a professional helpline for individuals seeking further assistance.
