IoUSW – A new articulation pathway for SEGi Diploma in Music graduates

Let the music play – that is the common consensus. And the majority of us knows the value of music.
SEGi is one institution that recognises and applauds musical talent and strives to bring more and
more opportunities to spur our musicians on and showcase their talents. In this effort, we have
created even greater horizons for musicians who want to gain world-class certification.
SEGi College now offers another great opportunity for music students to obtain solid credentials
from the University of South Wales on top on our other affiliation with the University of Auckland.
SEGi graduates from our Diploma in Music may apply to gain direct articulation to the final-year
study of two USW undergraduate music programmes.

These are the one-year Bachelor of Science, Honours (BSc [Hons]) in Creative Industries (Popular
Music Technology) with first-year modules that include music composition, sound for film and TV,
personal business marketing and a major project with only coursework and without exams, as well
as the Bachelor of Arts, Honours (BA [Hons]) in Popular and Commercial Music (Year 3), where finalyear students get to specialise in a creative or industry-focused major project and dissertation on an
area of interest, which could be as professionally musician (a student-led research project), a
practical or academic project including ‘Immersed in the City’ to plan and execute a professional
music festival, or be part e‘Industry Ready’, a project to plan their own careers and portfolio
development, among other things.

Ranked 1001 in World University Rankings by Times Higher Education and with an overall score of
4.2 stars according to student reviews on Studyportals, the University of South Wales is the thirtyfifth-largest university in the UK and the second largest in Wales. It prides itself on the high
employment rates of its graduates, and the fact that its students are given the opportunity to
prepare for the working world through simulation environments. The Faculty of Creative Industries is
renowned for producing theatre designers, poets, scriptwriters, and authors. It includes a film
school, animation facilities, broadcasting studios, and a photography school. The university is also
famous for its national music and drama conservatoire, the Royal Welsh College of Music and
Drama.

The USW Music and Sound department provides real-world simulation, education and networks that
prepare students for successful careers within the music industry. Its location in Cardiff, a beautiful
city recognised as the City of Music in the UK, has strong connections to the music industry that
provide ideal backdrops for students, with collaborations with Natwest Bank, the Music Managers
Forum, BBC Horizons, Warner Music, Swn Festival and Boomtown, all of which are at the heart of
these music courses.

These USW programmes, with only nine months of invaluable learning experience, provide
graduates from the SEGi Diploma in Music with another valuable option to fast-track their way to a
degree leading to successful careers in music.
Cardiff, Wales, is the city of music, officially declared by England, and it organises countless music
festivals (for example, the Immersed Music Festival) each year with the creative industries, including
over two hundred production houses such as BBC Wales. There are also lots of opportunities for
conversations and masterclasses with industry professionals and alumni, including Holly Evans and
Romesh Dodangoda, as well as famous music producers, DJs, Grammy nominees, and the remixer
High Contrast.

This one-year degree at Cardiff means that aspiring musicians will get to study in the most
affordable city in the UK where international students can work part-time time on their student visas
with an option to stay on to work in the UK for four years after the completion of their courses on
graduate visas, something which can be converted to working visas.

Skills and knowledge in the creative or popular music field provide the perfect balance for the solid
classical-focused music training received at SCSJ’s music diploma. This very hands-on and industry based one-year course will provide the education required for 21st-century musicians who will enjoy
multi-disciplinary-career practice and success.

When it comes to music, USW is the answer for students who want to study and experience the very
best in music. And SEGi is where this can all happen.
