The Community Service Students under the School of MPU & Language have organised an event called ‘A Day in Refugee Centre’. The students have collaborated with ElShaddai Learning Refugee Centre, a non-government organisation (NGO) that supports refugees, stateless people, asylum-seekers, and marginalised diaspora communities in Malaysia.
The event aims to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDG) of enhancing the well-being of the children and providing support and assistance to the children in the refugee centre. The students could improve their connection and communication with people from various cultural backgrounds through interactive activities.
The event was held at ElShaddai Refugee Learning Centre (ERLC) in Klang, Selangor. The event was participated by secondary school students and volunteers from BSc (Hons) Psychology course.
Yeoh Sun Wei, the Psychology Programme Leader, was invited to attend the event as a guest of honour. Throughout the event, the students engaged in station activities with the children.
The theme of the event was the theme of truthfulness. The students prepared four relevant station games: Snakes & Ladders, Werewolf Game, Who is Spy/Fox, and The Blindfold. They also had a group discussion with children after a presentation by an ERLC teacher.
At the end of the event, the students distributed goodies bags to the centre to appreciate for the collaboration. Overall, the event enabled the students to realise the significance of organising this voluntary activity. They can also improve their interaction and communication with participants from various cultural backgrounds and have a deeper understanding of others.
