All organisations that work with children should have safeguarding policies and procedures to ensure that every child has a right to equal protection from harm. Setting up and following good safeguarding policies and procedures means children are safe from adults and other children who might pose a risk. This includes voluntary and community organisations, private sector providers, as well as schools and hospitals.
On 26 March 2022, SEGi College’s School of MPU and Language collaborated with AZ Preschool to organise a virtual webinar entitled “Working Together to Safeguard Children” via Zoom. The purpose of this event was to raise awareness among the public to ensure that our children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care and to understand the importance of protecting children from maltreatment.
Dr Liew Zheyi, a consultant respiratory paediatrician from University Hospital of North Durham, and Dr Gan Cheng Guang, a paediatric specialist from Hospital Putrajaya, were invited for this sharing session to educate our community to have a better understanding of child-protection and safeguarding procedures, and to understand the importance of recording accidents, incidents and existing injuries with the complete relevant forms. A few case examples of this type of incident also were brought up in the discussion based on their previous experiences as medical practitioners in government hospitals. They also highlighted the existence of one-stop-crisis-centre guidelines from our Ministry of Health to raise issues regarding this topic. The webinar was successful in creating awareness among the public to protect children from abuse and maltreatment and to prevent harm to children’s health and/or development to ensure that our children grow up with the provision of safe and effective care.
