Twenty students from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences of SEGi College Sarawak visited the Open Day of the Institute of Health and Community Medicine (IHCM) located at UNIMAS, SARAWAK, on 4 October 2022. The objective of the visit was for the students to participate in fun activities related to molecular biology and to enhance their knowledge and interest in the science and technology industry.
The IHCM is a widely known institute in Sarawak that studies various tropical diseases such as enteroviruses, dengue, adenovirus, and respiratory-related diseases. It teaches different types of molecular biology techniques, such as molecular cloning, polymerase chain reactions (PCR), real-time PCR, genome sequencing, and gel electrophoresis.
The visit gave the students a wonderful opportunity to boost their classroom-learning of molecular biology, DNA replication, and basic virus structure, as well as good pipetting techniques. They also took a tour of the lab museum to learn about the machines and apparatus that are used in molecular biology.
This visit provided the students with in-depth understanding of the mechanisms relevant to viruses, and knowledge of the methods to identify and isolate molecular components in cells including DNA and RNA.
