Students benefitted from assignments outside the classroom

By Ms Candy Chong, Programme Leader, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences

Taking a class outside of the classroom can enhance the learning outcomes of any course by showcasing course content as it exists in the world. The same goes for the presentation outside the classroom, in which the communication and interpersonal skills of the students can be enhanced.

With this concept, Candy Chong, the lecturer for the subject Hematology 1, had decided to let the students who were enrolled on this subject present their assignment (brochure) about the various types of blood disorders at SEGi College Sarawak, main campus lobby area.

There was a total of six students who were enrolled on this subject. The types of blood disorders that they presented were Anemia (lacking red blood cells), Leukemia (excessive numbers of white blood cells), Thrombocytosis (excessive numbers of platelets) & Thrombocytopenia (lacking platelets).

All students had designed the brochure with information such as signs and symptoms, factors contributing to blood disorders, laboratory diagnostic tests, normal ranges of the laboratory diagnostic tests, interpretation of results, treatments, prevention, conclusion and references. The students also included some blood disorders-related pictures in the brochure.

The brochure presentation was conducted on 25 November 2022, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. The students were ready at the lobby area half an hour earlier to set up the table for the presentation. All students started to approach the students from other faculties to share their outcomes.

Students from the Faculty of Business, Accountancy and Information Technology, Faculty of Law and Faculty of Education and Social Sciences asked the relevant questions to the presenters. They claimed that they had learned something new from this batch of students.

This assignment outside the classroom presentation not only provided new information to students from other faculties, but the presenters also learned how to approach and communicate with people. The presentation ended with a group photo.
