Unveiling the Inner Workings of Malaysia’s Healthcare System

Students taking the Diploma in Healthcare at SEGi College Sarawak recently held a group presentation on the overview of healthcare delivery models, healthcare providers, financing, and key stakeholders in the system. The main objective of this presentation was to showcase their knowledge of the fundamental components, functions, and structure of the healthcare system. They were divided into four groups of five members each, and were assessed accordingly by the subject lecturer.

The study of the healthcare system is an essential pursuit for individuals aspiring to and contribute to the physical and mental well-being of others, thus making a positive impact on society. It provides valuable insights into the complex dynamics, challenges, and opportunities within the fields of healthcare.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) describes a health system as one which encompasses all organisations, people, and actions whose primary intent is to promote, restore, or maintain health. The healthcare system in Malaysia is provided by both the public and private sectors.

Public healthcare is paid by Malaysian citizens through the general taxation of income, which means that patients are only required to pay nominal fees in this heavily subsidised public sector. However, the nominal fees in this public system are only applicable for Malaysian nationals, and the government does not have a reciprocal healthcare policy with any other country. Foreigners are eligible for public healthcare, so long as they pay additional fees, or they can alternatively opt for private healthcare.

Towards the end of the presentation, the students were given the opportunity to ask questions and share additional input related to the topic.

Apart from demonstrating their knowledge of the healthcare system in Malaysia, this presentation also enhanced the students’ confidence in public speaking and allowed them the opportunity to learn to improve their communication skills.
