Students pursuing the Diploma in Information Technology and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science at SEGi College Sarawak recently embarked on an enriching educational journey to the 27th World Congress on Innovation & Technology 2023, alongside the 6th International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2023, hosted at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK). Guided by experienced educators Mr. Colin Khoo, Senior Lecturer, and Mr. Vincent Sajem, Lecturer, the students delved into the forefront of technological innovation.
The primary aim of this field trip was to immerse students in the latest industry developments and emerging trends directly relevant to their fields of study. Experiencing diverse topics such as Artificial Intelligence, Smart Cities, the Internet of Things (IoT), Cybersecurity, and Space Technology, students gained invaluable insights into the rapidly evolving landscape of technology. A standout moment was the opportunity for students to engage with Grace the Robot, hailed as the world’s premier nursing assistant robot. This interaction provided a unique hands-on experience, enriching students’ understanding of industry demands and technological advancements.
“As educators in the field of Information Technology and Computer Science, we recognise the immense value of exposing students to real-world applications and cutting-edge innovations,” remarked Mr. Colin Khoo. “Field trips of this nature bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in the classroom and practical skills required in the industry.”
Echoing Mr. Khoo’s sentiments, Mr. Vincent Sajem added, “The global reliance on technology continues to grow exponentially, and it’s imperative for our students to stay abreast of these developments. Field trips such as this not only enhance their academic learning but also foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills necessary for success in the digital age.”
As the global landscape becomes increasingly technology-driven, the demand for skilled graduates in Information Technology and Computer Science has surged. Educational initiatives like field trips play a pivotal role in equipping students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in today’s tech-centric world.
The field trip to WCIT 2023 provided SEGi’s students with a unique opportunity to explore and engage with cutting-edge technology. With guidance from experienced educators and exposure to industry-leading innovations, students are better prepared to meet the challenges and embrace the opportunities of the digital era.
