Hands-on excellence: SEGi’s blood transfusion visit ignites learning

SEGi’s Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology students had a remarkable opportunity to visit the Department of Blood Transfusion at Sarawak General Hospital on 3 November 2023. This visit aimed to provide students with hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the critical role played by the blood transfusion unit in hospitals.

During the visit, the students were divided into groups and taken to two sections of the department: the Clinical Transfusion Unit and the Blood Donation Unit. Under the guidance of experienced medical laboratory technologists, the students had the chance to explore various aspects of these units. They were introduced to blood grouping and cross-matching tests using the gel card method, as well as techniques for handling red blood cells, plasma, and white blood cell components within the Clinical Transfusion Unit.

In the Blood Donation Unit, students were familiarised with the process of blood donor screening. They learned how to ensure donors are prepared for donation and had the unique opportunity to witness a real blood donation process during their visit. Additionally, the students gained insights into blood component separation and blood test screening for donors. The medical laboratory technologists provided comprehensive explanations about the importance and roles of each section.

The visit not only involved verbal explanations but also encouraged student participation through question-and-answer sessions. Field trips like this are crucial as they allow students to engage with content in diverse ways. By presenting concepts through various media and modalities, field trips cater to different learning styles and boost student confidence. The holistic learning experience enhances students’ ability to grasp and retain knowledge, serving as a valuable touchpoint when they return to theory classes.

SEGi’s commitment to providing practical experiences and comprehensive education is evident through initiatives like this visit to the Department of Blood Transfusion. By exposing students to real-world healthcare settings, SEGi equips them with invaluable skills and knowledge that will contribute to their future success.
