By Mr. Gregory Poh, Lecturer, Faculty of Hospitality
Mr Gregory Poh, lecturer of Oenology, and Mr Persus Giter, Lecturer of Wine and Food, both of the Faculty of Hospitality of SEGi College Sarawak, recently organised a learning visit to The Den Kuching. The purpose of this visit was to allow our students to gain more knowledge and skills on how to identify different types of wine, such as to learn about the different regions of origin, the characteristics of wine, and to differentiate between and identify red and white wines. Our students will also learn how to become a professional sommeliers and how to appropriately and professionally serve wine.
What is a Sommelier? A sommelier is a wine steward, also known as a knowledgeable wine professional who typically works in a fine-dining establishment or bistro. A sommelier should have formal training to be able to be competent in all aspects of wine service, wine and food pairings, and wine storage.
This learning visit was held on Frida 8 April 2022 from 2.00pm to 4.00pm, The Den Kuching is located at the Sarawak Tourism Complex. Twelve students from the Diploma in Hotel Management and Diploma in Culinary Arts taking Oenology and Wine and Food participated.
They were greeted at The Den Kuching by Mr Dennis, Manager, who has vast experience in the industry. After a welcoming and introduction, Dennis introduced the menu with its various wine selection.
Dennis then gave a briefing on how to understand wines through region and characteristics, and how to differentiate between red and white wine. The students were also introduced to house wine and the correct methods to serve wine.
It was a fun and insightful visit for all the students, and SEGi College Sarawak thanks The Den and Dennis for making this possible for us.
