A tribute beyond textbooks: SEGi’s tourism students commemorate veterans

On 28 August 2023, SEGi’s Diploma in Tourism Management students, accompanied by their lecturer Dayangku, attended the Service of Commemoration organised by the Sarawak Tourism Federation Heritage Development Committee. The event, held at the Sarawak Heroes Memorial Graves, was a poignant tribute to veterans from Australia and New Zealand. The students participated in the ceremony to honour the sacrifices made by these brave individuals.

The Service of Commemoration drew a significant crowd, highlighting the community’s respect and gratitude towards the veterans. The students had the opportunity to witness the solemn occasion and understand the significance of paying tribute to those who fought for freedom.

During the service, the students listened attentively to speeches delivered by the veterans, gaining insights into their war experiences. The veterans shared personal stories that left a lasting impact on the students, allowing them to appreciate the sacrifices made during times of conflict. Singing hymns and laying wreaths at the memorial further emphasized the students’ commitment to honouring and remembering these heroes.

After the service, the students had the privilege of engaging in conversations with the veterans. This interaction provided a unique opportunity for the students to ask questions, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the veterans’ experiences and their lives beyond the war. The students expressed their gratitude for this meaningful encounter and cherished the lessons they learned from these courageous individuals.

In addition to exploring the sacrifices made by the veterans, the students delved into the historical context of the war. They learned about its causes, major battles fought, and its global impact. This comprehensive understanding offered a broader perspective on the war and its significance in shaping world history.

The students’ attendance at the Service of Commemoration not only allowed them to pay their respects but also provided an invaluable educational experience. It deepened their appreciation for the sacrifices made by veterans and expanded their knowledge of World War history.

SEGi remains committed to providing students with meaningful opportunities to engage with historical events and learn from real-life experiences. This event served as a testament to SEGi’s dedication to holistic education.
