SEGi College Sarawak’s Debate Team joined the recent World Debate Open competition organised by the Malaysian Institute for Debate and Public Speaking (MIDP) on 13 and 14 August 2022. The debaters were led by their trainer, Samuel Tuah, a law lecturer in the Faculty of Business, Accountancy and Law.
In this year’s WDO competition, the SEGi Sarawak debaters, all law students, were first-time participants in the championship. SEGi College Sarawak would like to thank its sponsors, PS Soo Li Ching and Ms Vivian Lee Ai Ling. They generously supported the team representing not only SEGi but Sarawak and Malaysia as well.
The World Debate Open (WDO) is an annual international championship. This year, the competition was hosted by MIDP and conducted online via Zoom. The competition focuses on developing critical and creative thinking, confidence and character building, English language proficiency, and communication skills amongst students through high-quality adjudication and thought-provoking topics. It was conducted using the British Parliamentary format, where two speakers from each team compete against other participants.
If you are interested in debating and want to participate in debate competitions, come and study law at SEGi College Sarawak. Our student bodies, such as the SEGi Advocacy and Moot Club and SEGi Law Society, conduct training for members and law students on debating, mooting and advocacy. SEGi College Sarawak is the only college with a faculty that provides legal education in East Malaysia. The college offers teaching of the UK University of London LLB and the SEGi Diploma in Law programmes. We also provide the A-Level programme, a pre-university qualification from Pearson Edexcel International, UK.
