Resilience and Entrepreneurship during Covid-19 Pandemic

SEGi College Penang’s School of American Degree Program conducted a webinar in the midst of the pandemic to discuss with industry panels on how the pandemic has impacted their businesses and how they build resilience to overcome the challenges their businesses faced during the pandemic. The panel of speakers were Mr Teo Boon Kiat (BK) from PWR Gym Penang, Ms Arianna Oh (representative) of Green Plant Society and Mr Jery Yeoh of Whytehouse Education Group along with Ms Asnina Anandan, Lecturer and Academic Leader of the American Degree Program as the moderator. The nature of their businesses deferred from each other but they shared how the pandemic had instead boost their businesses. The panels shared on their challenges, government support and sop, ways of manoeuvring their business during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Jery who runs Early Years Education centres shared how the pandemic had pushed him to think of ways to survive and thrive to ensure that his teacher’s salary is paid, as well as provide the children at his centres the best education experience as they had to move into online classes in the first MCO period that was implemented in March 2020. BK had just started his business at the time the first MCO was announced and had to think of ways on keeping his business up by renting out gym equipment’s to his members. Arianna shared with the audiences that the Green Plant Society had to move into selling plants on online platforms like Lazada and Shopee to keep sales up. Their sales actually went up especially after moving into online platforms.

The take away message by all speakers for young entrepreneurs whom were to set up their businesses during this pandemic is, they need to be able to keep the fire up, be creative, don’t stick to the old ways of doing things, be resourceful and know their business well before embarking in any type of business. As Mr Jery said, “Now is the best time to get into the market, because for me the pandemic has broken down all barriers, marketing and branding has become cheaper with Facebook, Instagram etc. It’s never going to be easy as entrepreneurs regardless of Covid or no Covid, but it is a good time to come in the market”.
