Educational Visit to George Town World Heritage

In an effort to widen the perspectives of our Hospitality and Tourism Management students and to inspire an appreciation for the importance of preserving our shared heritage, eighteen students and a lecturer from SEGi College Penang visited George Town World Heritage Incorporated (GTWHi) on 3 April 2023. The organisation is responsible for managing, safeguarding, and promoting George Town as a sustainable heritage city.

During the visit, Mr Vick Quah Swee Leang, the Acting Manager of the Department of Communications and Collaborations, gave a detailed presentation on George Town’s UNESCO inscription, its Outstanding Universal Values, and GTWHI’s efforts to preserve its cultural heritage.

The students learnt about the efforts that go into preserving and maintaining historical artifacts and sites, as well as the importance of ongoing research and education in the field of history. In addition to learning about history, the students also received valuable lessons about cultural diversity in the traditions and customs of the different ethnic and cultural groups.

The students were thus able to gain a deeper understanding of the experiences and perspectives of people from different backgrounds, enabling them to foster empathy and appreciation for diversity, as well as promote a sense of unity and commonality. The lessons learnt in this visit will go far in enriching their academic journey and their future careers.
