The goal of the competition is to promote innovative culture in engineering design work, tackle real-world problems with practical engineering solutions, and churn out brightest talents for product development, further research, and commercialization. We welcome the most ambitious, creative, and smart students to participate and showcase your talents!
The main objectives of the IoT Challenge 2019: –
- To expose the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology to our students.
- To increase interest and awareness in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects among high school students.
- To attract new ideas and stimulate innovations in the target IoT verticals.
- To develop local talents to propel Malaysia as the Premier Regional IoT Development Hub.
Through this event, the students would have a bigger exposure to STEAM such as Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics (STEAM) which will equip the secondary school students with different knowledge which is not taught in the common classes and prepare them for the Industrial Revolution 4.0.
There are total of FOUR categories offered in IoT Challenge 2019.

- IoT Sustains Water, Energy & Utilities
- IoT Transforms Road Transportation
- IoT Modernizes Agriculture
There were around 20 teams participated in this event. Through this event, each category was in charge of two lecturers. From the beginning, the lecturers had to brief the to the participants on how to do in their pitching. Students were given 1.5 hours to prepare their pitching on a few pieces of mahjong papers. After that, all teams were presented in the auditorium. The judges depended on the rubrics to provide the marks to each team. After lunchtime, we announced the winners. All students were excited when they heard their team/school won the prize. Overall, this event was successfully organized in our college.
Through this event (IoT Challenge Activities), SEGi College Penang incorporates innovative culture among students to embark into sciences and engineering fields where the event prepares the students through leader cultivation to foster unorthodox mindset and its application. The event promotes innovative thinking among students by encouraging the discovery of new ideas to engineer effective environment by instilling curiosity mindset, relationship enhancement and constructive communication.
The vast opportunity in IoT event creates the exchange of ideas innovatively among students and assuring the students to think out of the box. The event encourages the students to think like an engineer where the students are being tested by setting the bar beyond its reasonable factor that prompts the students to think possibilities that they would not be considered before. With the rewarding experience through participation in this event, the students develop themselves as system thinkers who have the ability to solve problems that takes them from developing an innovative idea to the final product. The event stimulates the students to continuously aim for improvements by applying their knowledge, skills and observations and experience to problems. In conclusion, the students obtain a rewarding experience through this event which actively encourages and support creative and innovative thinking from the students that lead them to be interested in science and engineering field. Indirectly, the students produce the characteristics of an engineer during their life and become a competent problem solver and flexible in adaptation to modern society.
