It is familiar that classroom learning commonly incorporating with conventional study in classroom, quizzes and examinations. Breaking off this concept, students who are studying Bsc (Hons) International Tourism and Hospitality Management from University of Sunderland, UK not only studying in classroom, yet they are going for multiple field work or field visit, which let them to break free from the classroom and learn in new environments—explore further a field!
Educator around the world agreed that field work studies create more impactful learning and growth opportunities to study the real world. Furthermore, field work studies give first hand experiences that encourage critical thinking; learning in the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains; development of scientific thinking skills; problem solving to make immediate decisions and consume course material. This was the formula for accelerated and deep-rooted learning.
Over this years, students manage to travel inbound for their field-visit and they had opportunities to explore some of the famous island destination which called “Maldives of Malaysia” such as Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Langkawi. Aside of that, students also had visited famous local city like Malacca – the historical city, Kelantan – city of authentic Malay culture and lifestyle, Ipoh which known as Malaysia’s Cultural Heritage Capital and last but not least, the most urban and lively capital city of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
Besides that, our students also had visited several international destinations such as Bangkok, Thailand’s capital city known for ornate shrines and vibrant street life; Ho Chi Minh city, commonly known as Saigon which city treasure trove of French colonial-era architecture; and Singapore which well-known as the most urbanization city in Southeast Asia.
Aside of fulfilling assessment requirement, students will participate in planning their own trip including booking of the accommodation, creating the itinerary which related with research theme, as well arranging the transportation and activities. This will give them exposure on handling the “real” travelling matters.
In short, through the field work study, students can experience the learning environment while having fun with their teammates. It is undoubted that field work study experience can be accelerating your education!
