On 20 June 2022, in conjunction with SEGi’s 45th anniversary and World Environment Day, SEGi College Penang’s School of Hospitality and Tourism together with Hompton by the Beach Hotel, organised a beach-cleaning activity covering the beach areas around the hotel. This year’s World Environment Day theme was Only One Earth, highlighting the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by bringing transformative changes – through policies and our choices – towards cleaner, greener lifestyles. Aside from creating engagement with the industry, this project also aimed to raise awareness of marine pollution and the reduction of garbage and plastic in the ocean.
Upon our arrival at the hotel, Mr Lawrance Ayerru, the Human Resource Manager, met and briefed the students on the activities and the area for the cleaning project, which began at 9.30am and finished within an hour. A total of 63.1kg-worth of garbage was collected, including water bottles, cans, sandals, diapers, and clothing which had been discarded.
At the end of the activity, Lawrance discussed his experiences in the industry, giving our students much insight. The students were also taken on a tour of the hotel.
