SEGi’s website project started in September 2021 as an initiative of the management of SEGi Group of Colleges. The project was developed to upgrade the existing SGC website by introducing some new features such as an e-commerce platform, an interactive landing page, and a student and corporate services community page, amongst other services. The SGC website project involves our Creative Arts and Design students and Computing students from the various SEGi campuses.
The objectives of the project are to:
- develop fully functional brand-new pages and integrate them with the existing website and other databases/CMSes associated with the website.
- provide students with the opportunity to work on real-life projects as vendorsand at the same time, earn coursework points.
The SGC website project was led by Mr CY Li , the project manager, and all the students were supervised by the IT lecturers from SEGi College Penang, namely Mr Firdaus, Ms Annida, and Ms Rosmah. Fifteen final-year students from SEGi College Penang taking the Bachelor of Science (Hons) Computing programme through the University of Greenwich took part in the project.
Two main sub-projects were developed concurrently, being the SGC E-Shop project and the Valued-Corporate-Partners and alumni pages. Each of these sub-projects had its own client who provided all their system requirements. The project client for the SGC E-Shop Project was Mr Stanley Yap, Operations and IT Manager of SEGi College Subang Jaya, while the project client for the Valued-Corporate-Partner and alumni pages was Mr Edward Low, Senior Manager of Student and Corporate Services of SEGi Group of Colleges. Clear and concise communication with the clients enabled the team to understand the clients’ needs and the system requirements. The student leaders of SGC Eshop Project are Ooi Kokuhiro and Maverick Lee while the student leaders of the Valued-Corporate-Partner and alumni pages were Lew Min Zheng and Ooi Zi Xian.
The SGC E-shop will serve as a platform for SEGi Group of Colleges to sell merchandise, short courses, event tickets, vouchers, facilities, rental, etc. This e-shop will be used and managed by all SEGi College campuses across Malaysia as each of the campuses offer different ranges of products.
The first phase of the E-Shop will allow four SEGi College campuses to sell their products on the platform. In the second phase of E-Shop, SEGi E-Shop will be open to the public for the partners of SEGi Group of colleges to sell their products on the platform with a concessionary prices for all SEGi students.
The Valued-Corporate-Partner and Alumni page will feature all valued partners of SEGi Group of Colleges and showcase all the promotions and discounts that are available for students of SEGi Group of Colleges. All students will also be able to find out about the job vacancies posted by SEGi’s partners. There will also be an alumni portal which will allow all graduated alumni to log in to connect with all other the alumni.
Both projects started in September 2021, and were completed in April 2022. The project timeline can be separated into two phases, namely the design phase and the development phase. From September 2021 to December 2021, the students from both the Creative Arts and Design Faculty and Computing Faculty created the initial prototype design of the systems. After the designs and prototypes were approved by the management of SEGi Group of Colleges, the computing students continued with the development of both projects in January 2022 till April 2022.
