SEGi College Penang organised a study visit to the he Prestige Hotel Penang on 21 April 2022. The Prestige Hotel is a five-star luxury homegrown hospitality label located in the heart of the Georgetown UNESCO World Heritage site, and was inspired by colonial Victorian heritage.
The students were greeted by Mr Melvin Ooi, General Manager, and Ms Rahidah Abdul Wahid, the Human Resource Manager. It was an honour for them to have the general manager to brief us on the hotel’s history and operations and his personal experiences in the industry. He encouraged and motivated the students to be in the industry for the long haul. Other heads of departments were also there to brief us on their respective departments, including Housekeeping, Food and Beverage, Sales and Marketing, Kitchen, and Front Office. After the briefing, the students had the opportunity to ask questions about the hotel and issues related to the hospitality industry.
The visit continued with an hour-long hotel tour during which the students could experience for themselves the different departments of the hotel, including areas such as the lobby, restaurants, gymnasium, swimming pool and banquet halls. The students were also given the opportunity to visit different types of guest rooms including the standard room, the deluxe room, and also their most expensive suite, the Loft Suite.
Overall, it was an excellent experience for all and a fun way to discover a hotel! Although classroom learning is highly enjoyable, taking students into a workplace environment where they can see how the things they learn work in real-life. We truly hope that our students will gain more understanding and experiences through the visit.
