SEGi College recently fulfilled the assessment requirement for TOU2214N Tour Planning and Design, when our Diploma in Tourism Management took a daytrip to Ipoh, Perak on 31 March 2022. This trip was also joined by degree students fulfilling the assessment for TLH214 Tourism Fieldwork. During the trip, the students conducted observation and collected data based on the study area given.
The trip started at 7.30am from the college and the journey was around 2 hours. Our first stop was the Ipoh Heritage Trails, which started at Ipoh Railway Station. The Ipoh Railway Station was initially meant to be a hospital and used before the 1900s as such before being turned into a station.
The trip moved to the Ipoh Station Square, famous as a cenotaph, unveiled during the 1927 Armistice Day, to honour the men of Perak who died in the Great War.
The Ipoh heritage trails are marked with street signs or footprints painted in yellow on the pavement. The trail continued with visits to Ipoh Town Hall, Ipoh High Court, Ipoh Padang, Panglima Lane (Concubine Lane) and Birch Memorial Clock Tower. The trip then continued to Kek Lok Tong Cave Temple, used as a place of worship since the 1920’s.
Our last stop for the trip was Kellie’s Castle located in Batu Gajah. Kellie’s Castle is supposed to be the first-ever mansion in Malaya with an elevator.
The daytrip ended at 5.30pm with the students returning to the college. Field trips are a vital part of the student’s learning journey as they offer students the necessary experience which cannot be imitated within the college setting. The students affirmed that the trip to Ipoh was a tremendously optimistic experience for them.
