How to start research is a common challenge encountered by undergraduate students. It can be difficult and discouraging at times, but help is here!
To help our undergraduate students reach their goals, the School of Education and Languages (SOEL) of SEGi College Penang held a virtual workshop called Literature Review and Methodology, on March 31 2022 at 3.00 pm on Microsoft Teams. Mr Brendan Ch’ng was the invited speaker who delivered a broad view of writing literature reviews and research methodology to undergraduate students across our campuses.
Mr Ch’ng is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Educational Psychology and Counselling at the University of Malaya’s Faculty of Education. His present research focuses on individuals with sensory-processing sensitivity and the underlying mechanisms that support their psychological well-being. Mr Ch’ng is also a member of the COVIDiSTRESS consortium, one of the world’s largest consortia of researchers for investigating the psychological, social, and behavioural consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global population.
This undergraduate research workshop was conducted to provide an appropriate platform for our students to obtain insights on literature review and research methodology in a detailed manner. In addition, it allowed the students to understand how to write these literature reviews and plan for the appropriate methodology procedures. Specifically, the speaker showed the students how to carry out a comprehensive search for relevant and published articles through several reliable mediums for their further references.
In order to ensure that the students were on track in reviewing past research, Mr Ch’ng conveyed an organised template to tabulate the details of a literature review which can be easily incorporated into the chapters’ discussion. He also taught the procedures of collecting and presenting data to achieve an overview of the writing research methodology.
Taking part in this research workshop has allowed our students to discover myriad strategies in research.
