SEGi College Penang recently participated in the programme titled “Community Eco-Tour Guide: Becoming Local Eco-Tour Guides for Sungai Juru,” organised by Golden City / Juru Auto-City. The initiative aimed to introduce participants to the ecological significance of Sungai Juru while equipping them with foundational eco-tour guiding skills. The programme aligns closely with the learning outcomes of hospitality and tourism education, emphasising experiential learning, sustainability, and community-based tourism.
First-year students from the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, enrolled in the Introduction to Hospitality Studies course, joined the programme alongside villagers from the Sungai Juru community. This collaboration created a unique opportunity for students to engage directly with local stakeholders and gain hands-on experience in community-based tourism.
The programme focused on developing students’ understanding of Sungai Juru’s biodiversity, including its flora and fauna, while introducing essential guiding skills such as storytelling, visitor management, and safety awareness. On-site observations and guided learning sessions allowed students to witness eco-tourism operations and environmental conservation practices in real-life settings.
Participation by the local community enriched the learning experience by providing practical insights into community-based eco-tourism initiatives, highlighting the important role that local residents play in preserving natural habitats and promoting sustainable tourism practices.
SEGi College Penang expresses sincere appreciation to Golden City / Juru Auto-City for organising this meaningful programme, as well as to all facilitators, researchers, and the Sungai Juru community for their support and collaboration. Their involvement was integral to the programme’s success and provided students with authentic learning experiences.
The initiative provided valuable opportunities for students to enhance their practical skills, deepen their understanding of sustainable tourism, and foster stronger ties between the institution, industry partners, and the local community. It reflects SEGi College Penang’s commitment to sustainability, experiential education, and community engagement.
