There was something special about this recital. It was not just a performance. It was a conversation between cultures, generations and journeys.
SEGi College Subang Jaya welcomed back Dr Chin Hong Da, our proud alumnus, now Associate Professor of Music Composition at Western Illinois University. Returning to the very institution where his foundation was built, Dr Chin shared the stage with pianist Ms Wong See Yee for a lecture recital that blended artistry with insight.
Through works such as Clair de Lune by Malaysian composer Neo Hup Hiang and Northern Shaanxi by Cheng DaZhao, the audience experienced the expressive range of the Western concert flute, the traditional Chinese dizi, and the piano. More importantly, they witnessed how different musical traditions can speak to one another with respect and depth.
The session went beyond performance. Dr Chin and Ms Wong unpacked instrumental techniques, tonal colours and interpretive choices, giving students a rare look into how musicians think, shape sound and approach contemporary repertoire. For many in the room, this was an important reminder that music is not only about playing notes, but about understanding context, identity and intention.
By spotlighting Malaysian contemporary works alongside cross cultural repertoire, the recital reinforced the value of local creative voices within a global landscape. It also demonstrated how a strong foundation in learning, discipline and curiosity can evolve into international impact.
Moments like these matter. They connect classroom learning with lived experience, inspire students to think beyond boundaries, and reaffirm SEGi’s commitment to nurturing artistic growth grounded in cultural awareness and excellence.
