The Creative Economy Is Booming — Are You Ready to Join In?

Students from SEGi College recently took an exciting leap from classroom to career with a company tour to a professional animation studio — a curated experience designed to bridge academic learning with industry application. The visit offered participants a behind-the-scenes look into one of the world’s fastest-growing creative sectors, allowing them to witness first-hand how industry standards, tools, and workflows come to life in a professional setting.

As students explored live projects and interacted with professionals across various roles, they were exposed to the intricate ecosystem of an animation studio — from storyboarding and digital modelling to post-production and client delivery. These experiences brought clarity and context to the theoretical concepts they had studied, reinforcing their classroom knowledge with real-world relevance.

According to UNESCO, creative industries are among the most dynamic sectors in the global economy, generating annual revenues of over USD 2.25 trillion and employing nearly 30 million people worldwide. With animation being a key contributor to this growth, early exposure to industry practices positions students competitively for future opportunities. The tour further provided insights into the diverse career pathways available within the animation field, including roles in design, production, visual effects, and project management.

Beyond technical skills, the experience underscored the importance of adaptability, collaboration, and creative problem-solving — qualities essential to thrive in today’s innovation-driven job market. The World Economic Forum’s 2023 Future of Jobs report highlights that 85 million jobs may be displaced by automation by 2025, but 97 million new roles may emerge, many of which will be in digital and creative industries. Equipping students with industry-relevant exposure is therefore more than enrichment — it’s an essential strategy for future-proofing their careers.

The tour also opened conversations around internship opportunities and potential work-based learning placements, reinforcing SEGi’s commitment to experiential education. By nurturing these industry connections, students gain more than just knowledge — they gain the vision and confidence to pursue careers in animation with clear intent and purpose.

Initiatives like this tour reflect SEGi’s holistic approach to education, one that integrates academic excellence with real-world application. As Malaysia’s creative sector continues to expand, nurturing homegrown talent through meaningful engagement is critical to building a sustainable pipeline of skilled professionals ready to contribute to national and global innovation.
