Southeast Asia Regional Montessori Round Table Discussion

SEGi College Subang Jaya (SCSJ) Faculty of Education has partnered with Montessori Centre International (MCI) UK since 1999, offering a suite of Montessori teacher training programmes. SCSJ has produced hundreds of Montessori graduates who have since become passionate Montessori practitioners who own and run Montessori preschools of their own, locally or internationally; work as consultants or trainers in Montessori education, or are involved in meaningful missionary work to serve the community.

The Montessori Round Table Discussion took place on 25 September 2020. It was facilitated by Jeremy Clarke (Head of Digital Education, MCI), Preethi Patel (Head of Education, MCI) and Ms Carolyn Choo (Head, Academic – Faculties, SCSJ). Attendance at the Round Table Discussion was by invitation only, and we had around 20 passionate Montessori leaders from various parts of East and West Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Myanmar.

The Round Table Discussion allowed the Montessorians to share their stories about their connection and journey with Montessori, their views on where Montessori was right now in the region, and where they wanted it to be. It was heart-warming to know that after celebrating the 150th birthday of Maria Montessori, her legacy has lived on, evidenced by the deep passion for her philosophy and practice in all participants. All saw the need for more training and advocacy on the Montessori method.

Moving forward, this Round Table Discussion paves the way for an even stronger partnership and collaboration with MCI, especially in developing Montessori programmes that meet today’s world. At SEGi, we are committed to helping our children develop to their full unique potential, to getting families closer together, and ultimately to building a strong and healthy community and nation.
