School of MPU & Language has recently organised a virtual event called “Art through A New Lens”. The event, open to the public, was to promote awareness among the public and minimise the stigma associated with mental health.
It was also aimed at educating the public on how to express themselves through art. Through conversation, participants were able to comprehend the perspectives, thoughts, and feelings of others. Participants were expected to draw their views of the world and society during the event.
Our guest speaker, Dr. Jasma Jamaludin, is both a medical doctor and an abstract artist who graduated from SEGi University. She shared with the participants what inspired her to start painting and what makes it unique to some individuals. As a doctor, she felt death, pain, and suffering through her patients. So, she started to paint experiences and expressions on canvas.
Another speaker, Thevamalar Sarancheeway, a lecturer at SEGi College Subang Jaya and a Licensed and Registered Psychotherapist, shared the significance of mental health and how art can be used to express oneself. Community awareness of mental health can reduce stigma and increase the chances for early intervention, which can result in a fast recovery.
After the event’s end, the participants better understand the importance of art and how it can influence our feelings, perspectives and thoughts. Learning more about mental health allows us to provide helpful support to those affected in our families and communities.
