Early childhood learning: Anywhere, anytime

Recent studies have shown that early childhood learning can occur anywhere and at any time. However, this idea can only be implemented if early childhood educators are well-trained and have important traits like adaptability, sensitivity, inventiveness, faith in children, patience, and an eagerness to learn. Heikki Vartia, Head of Global Partnerships (Asia) for HEI SCHOOLS, presented these findings during a seminar on 23 February 2023, at SEGi College Subang Jaya.

This idea serves as one of the founding concepts of HEI Schools, a research-based organisation. Participants in the SEGi College’s HEI Schools Teacher certificate short course examined how learning is not just restricted to structured learning activities. During routine care moments like arrival and departure times, mealtimes, dressing times, and transitions, learning opportunities can arise. This programme trains practitioners to recognise these chances and build upon them.

Recent observations, however, have demonstrated that learning opportunities are frequently overlooked, as was the case with a practicum student who was exclusively focused on a lesson about plant parts and failed to recognise the children’s interest in an ant found in the dirt. The student might have sparked an interest in environmental science and conservation if they had taken the chance to talk about the interaction between ants and plants.

The ability to trust children, be adaptable and creative, and have a thorough understanding of the subject matter are all essential traits for practitioners who want to make sure that learning occurs whenever and anywhere. Early childhood educators are equipped to support this kind of learning in their settings according to the HEI Schools Teacher Certificate.

The results of the study support the idea that learning can occur anywhere and at any time during the early years. The HEI Schools Teacher Diploma equips professionals with the abilities to identify and capitalise on learning opportunities, guaranteeing that kids get the best education possible.
