SEGi College Subang Jaya’s senior music lecturer, Yii Kah Hoe, is a renowned composer and Chinese dizi and xiao improviser in Malaysia. He has won several prestigious awards, including the 11th Boh Cameronian Arts Awards and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra Forum for Malaysian Composers. Yii has been recognised as one of the major voices among Southeast Asian composers of his generation, and his music has been widely performed in Asia, America, and Europe.
Currently in the United States for a scholarship programme, Yii has been working on several new compositions and performances. One of his latest works, “A message from the Mangrove Forest for Soprano, Piano and Soundscape,” was performed by Anne Harley and Mari Kawamura at The Scripps College in Claremont, California, on Feb 10.
On March 4th, Yii’s new work, “Of The Land” for English Horn, Baritone and Soundscape, will be world premiered by Keri McCarthy and Aaron Agulay at the Festival of Contemporary Artists in Music at the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center, WSU.
From March 28th to April 10th, Yii has been invited by The Scripps College to conduct several workshops, masterclasses, and concerts. He has also been invited to do a presentation and concert at the Annual World Music Festival at Northern Illinois University in Chicago from April 10th to 13th. Additionally, Yii will serve as the keynote speaker at the AsiaNetwork Conference in Columbus from April 14th to 16th.
Despite his busy schedule in the States, Yii is still supervising and guiding SEGi music students, especially those in the composition groups. Yii’s work and contributions to the music industry have undoubtedly made him a role model for young and aspiring musicians in Malaysia and beyond.
At SEGi College Subang Jaya, we are proud of Yii’s achievements and wish him all the best in his future endeavors. His success is an inspiration for all aspiring musicians, and we are grateful for his continued support of SEGi music students.
