On behalf of SEGi College Subang Jaya, I wish you all a very Happy New Year of the Ox!
Last year, 2020, was a challenging year for everyone. From students sitting for crucial exams, to teachers and educators, to working professionals who had to adjust to a remote working environment while juggling between work and family, to our front-liners who had to work long hours to take care of all of us.
In the spirit of the new year, I’d like to offer my personal reflections on the year that has passed and share some inspirations with you while ushering in the year of the Ox.
Move with the times, embrace technology
When the MCO hit in March last year, we went from face-to-face classes to blended learning within forty-eight hours. Our students’ learning went on uninterrupted. We did that with ease because we’re always prepared, especially since we invested in Blackboard, a multi-million-Ringgit world-class learning-management software. The IT team has also been very supportive in setting up Zoom accounts for classes to go online. All our preparations gave us the speed and agility in our implementation of new practices.
In 2020, we learned the importance of embracing new technology, so that we are better prepared for the future. All our preparations in the years prior gave us speed and agility in our implementation of new practices.
I encourage you to always adopt new technologies, learn with an open heart and embrace changes as they come.
Always listen, care and share.
During the MCO, realising how difficult things had gotten, and in living up to the #Kitajagakita spirit, we initiated efforts to spread warmth and positivity.
We started off by checking in with all our students and staff individually, to make sure they’re okay. And we went to distributing food and supplies to our students living in hostels, so that they’re taken care of even though they’re far from home. And from there we went to working with the Subang Jaya State Legislature to provide 24/7 online counselling services not only to our students but to the public, which was much needed, as it was a stressful time for all of us. And then to organising webinars with leading industry experts through our connections to share learnings, expert advice and industry best practices that benefited thousands of stakeholders in the area of business management, adaptation to technology, marketing, early childhood education, mental health and more. Our academic experts also partnered with industry experts to organise webinars to give expert advice to help organisations, entrepreneurs and employees navigate through the difficult time. For example, our Early Childhood Education Webinar series attracted tens of thousands of views where we invited leading experts in the field to share their learnings, best practices and advise for kindergarten teachers, owners and parents.
The pandemic has affected us all, but it also gave us countless opportunities to contribute to one another. So this year, I encourage you to do your part, to always listen, care for one another and share what you can, in true the true Malaysian #kitajagakita spirit.
Always believe in your ability to rise above challenges.
SEGians conquered 2020 with persistence and with a determined heart. The challenging times did not stop us from achieving our goals.
In August, we secured a partnership with the University of Malaya (the leading institution in Malaysia, ranked 59 in QS World University Rankings) to offer our students a shorter route to an Engineering Masters. Now our students can complete their Bachelor’s and Master’s in Engineering within four years instead of five.
In December, we organised the first-ever SEGi Mobile Legends Tournament online, attracting hundreds of youths to participate.
Throughout last year, our partnership with the Malaysian Trades Union Congress MTUC to offer reskilling and upskilling training to displaced workers during the MCO.
Our partnership with Yayasan KRU to help underprivileged creative talents secure job placements.
And many of our students and alumni won awards and recognitions for their hard work, research, career achievements throughout the year.
Make no mistake, the times are tough, but we believe we are tougher. In the new year, when you’re faced with adversity, always remember that you can rise above, you’re better than you thought you are, you can do it!
So this year of the Ox, I wish you all the power. Be like the hardworking ox. Embrace passion and determination, believe in yourself and strive for nothing less than excellence.
Happy Chinese New Year.
新年快乐,万事如意。
