On 1 August 2025, the Theatrette at SEGi became the stage for “Breaking the Silence: Legal & Ethical Issues to Sexual Harassment”, an event that united students, lecturers, and professionals in a call for safe, respectful environments in education and the workplace. Organised by the SEGi Moot & Law Society, the initiative combined law, ethics, and student creativity to confront one of the most urgent social issues of our time.
The programme highlighted the global prevalence of sexual harassment, an issue that continues to affect millions worldwide. According to UN Women, nearly one in three women globally has experienced physical or sexual violence in her lifetime. For Malaysia, a 2020 survey by Women’s Aid Organisation found that 62% of women had experienced workplace sexual harassment. These figures underscored the urgency of equipping students with awareness, knowledge of legal recourse, and the confidence to challenge misconduct.
SEGi College Sarawak students led the way with dramatic role-play performances that vividly illustrated scenarios of non-verbal and verbal harassment among peers and in the workplace. These impactful enactments reflected real-life dilemmas, exposing not only the trauma of harassment but also the frustration of institutional inaction. Such creative approaches to advocacy reinforced lessons that go beyond textbooks, embedding empathy, accountability, and ethical responsibility into student learning.
Guest speakers from the legal and corporate sectors deepened the discussion by sharing their expertise on institutional safeguards, ethical practices, and legal frameworks. Their insights highlighted the importance of strong policies and active enforcement, echoing the UN’s call through SDG 16 for inclusive, just, and accountable institutions. By engaging directly with industry practitioners, students gained a practical understanding of how justice and prevention must work hand-in-hand.
The event also represented the power of partnerships in driving cultural change. With educators, students, and professionals working together, the session became a living demonstration of how awareness can translate into action. Such collaboration mirrors the spirit of SDG 17, which stresses that achieving equality and justice requires shared responsibility across sectors and communities.
In her closing remarks, the student host reminded participants that sexual harassment is not just a legal issue but a matter of human rights. By sparking dialogue and building solidarity, the event reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces where respect and equality are non-negotiable. This alignment of academic learning with advocacy reflects SEGi’s dedication to producing graduates who are not only skilled but also socially conscious and courageous in championing justice.
