When National Pride Transforms Into Digital Storytelling

The Leo Club hosted the Merdeka e-Poster Competition from 19 August to 8 September 2025 at the Main Campus, an event that encouraged students to showcase their patriotism and digital creativity in celebration of Malaysia’s independence. The competition invited participants to design two digital posters, one commemorating Merdeka Day on 31 August and another for Malaysia Day on 16 September, offering a meaningful way for students to honour the nation’s heritage while refining their creative skills.

SEGi College Sarawak was represented by six talented participants who submitted artworks that captured the competition’s theme of unity and national pride. The winners were Kevin (1st Prize, RM38 + Badge), Leo Phyllis Lim (2nd Prize, RM28 + Badge), and Leo Teo Yv Hanng (3rd Prize, RM18 + Badge), whose designs stood out for their originality and strong reflection of Malaysia’s spirit of independence. The event proceeded seamlessly, providing students with a platform to express their national pride through modern digital design tools.

This initiative reflects the importance of nurturing creative expression and critical thinking among youth. According to UNESCO, arts and cultural education fosters not only creativity but also intercultural dialogue and civic engagement, which are key elements in shaping active and responsible citizens. By combining creativity with patriotism, students demonstrated how design and digital media can be powerful tools to celebrate identity and strengthen community bonds.

The competition also supported broader goals of sustainable development. It aligned with SDG 4 by promoting quality education through hands-on learning, while SDG 16 was reinforced through the theme of peace, justice, and strong institutions, reminding students of their role in safeguarding national unity. In a digital-first world, initiatives like this also prepare students with future-ready skills in communication and design, abilities that are increasingly essential in global careers.

By giving students an avenue to celebrate national milestones in innovative ways, SEGi continues to uphold its mission of producing graduates who are not only academically equipped but also culturally aware and socially engaged. The Merdeka e-Poster Competition exemplified how education can go beyond the classroom to foster unity, creativity, and pride among Malaysia’s youth.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
