Community-driven initiatives play a crucial role in improving healthcare accessibility, particularly for vulnerable groups. SEGi College Sarawak’s Leo Club actively contributed to this mission by participating in the Lions Club of Kota Sentosa’s Annual Food Fair 2024 on 2 December 2024 at Lions Nursing Home (LNH). With 102 stalls offering a variety of goods, the event successfully raised funds to enhance medical facilities and overall well-being for nursing home residents, ensuring sustainable care solutions for those in need.
The initiative aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, focusing on healthcare access and social inclusivity. Globally, the number of older adults requiring long-term care is projected to reach 277 million by 2050, making sustainable healthcare solutions an urgent necessity (source: World Health Organization). The funds raised will directly support medical resources, mental health programmes, and improved living conditions for elderly residents, reinforcing the importance of community partnerships in addressing healthcare challenges.
Led by Faculty Advisor and Leo Advisor Lion Vincent Cheong, five SEGi Leo Club members took charge of a stall offering fresh produce, beverages, and baked goods, contributing to the vibrant fundraising efforts. Research indicates that regular community engagement significantly improves students’ leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills, making initiatives like these not only impactful for society but also instrumental in youth development (source: Education Development Trust).
Dignitaries including Deputy Federal Minister of Economy YB Dato Hanifah Hajar Tai-Alsree, SUPP Kota Sentosa Assemblyman YB Wilfred Yap, LNH Chairman Datin Ellis Suriyati Haji Omar, and Organising Chairperson Marie Isabel Lim officiated the event, underscoring the significance of cross-sector collaborations in advancing social causes. Recognising the contribution made by SEGi, a certificate of appreciation was presented to Lion Vincent Cheong on behalf of SEGi Leo Club Sarawak and the Lions Club of Kuching Kota Sentosa, reflecting the impact of higher education institutions in driving community-focused initiatives.
With strong public participation, the fair successfully fostered a culture of giving and social responsibility, reinforcing that small collective actions lead to meaningful change. The growing need for sustainable elderly care solutions calls for continued advocacy and support, ensuring healthcare resources remain accessible to all, regardless of socioeconomic status.
SEGi remains dedicated to nurturing socially responsible students, equipping them with the skills, empathy, and leadership to contribute meaningfully to society. Strengthening local and global partnerships is essential in building a future where healthcare, education, and well-being are accessible to all.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
