On 10 June 2025, SEGi hosted a groundbreaking talk entitled “The Intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Law,” bringing law students face-to-face with the fast-evolving world of AI and its legal implications. Held at the college’s Theatrette, the session featured guest speaker Paolo Sofia, a Data Engineer from ABN AMRO Bank, Amsterdam, who drew from his expertise in artificial intelligence and robotics to unpack the challenges and possibilities AI presents in the realm of justice.
From neural networks and large language models to tools like ROSS, Kira Systems, and Juro, Paolo introduced how AI is rapidly transforming legal research, document review, and contract management. With studies showing that AI can outperform humans in certain legal predictions, the session gave students a front-row seat to the technologies shaping the future of legal practice. However, the talk also did not shy away from the risks—highlighting AI’s potential for bias, lack of transparency, and real-world cases of injustice caused by flawed systems.
These concerns tie directly into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16, which promotes peace, justice, and strong institutions. In a world where AI can influence legal decisions, the call for responsible, fair, and accountable use of technology is more urgent than ever. With 37% of organisations globally already implementing AI in some form, and another 42% exploring its integration, the need to train legal minds on digital ethics has never been more pressing.
The session also reflected SEGi College Sarawak’s commitment to SDG 4 on quality education, by empowering students with critical digital literacy skills and an ethical framework for navigating AI tools. Moreover, the emphasis on inclusivity and bias reduction speaks to SDG 10, reminding future legal professionals that technology must be designed to serve all communities, not just the privileged.
This event was made possible through the leadership of law lecturer Flora Santi and the support of the SEGi Moot and Law Society Committee. It marked another milestone in SEGi’s efforts to prepare students not just for the future of law, but for the ethical challenges that come with it.
This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 4 – Quality Education
SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
