This Wasn’t a Class Assignment. It Was a Call to Action.

SEGi students took a proactive step in promoting public health as members of the SEGi Leo Club Sarawak actively contributed to the Diabetes Awareness Campaign led by Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch. Held in collaboration with the Sarawak State Health Department and Lions Club District 308-A2, the campaign reached communities across the state on 6 April 2025, providing free diabetes screenings and educational resources. SEGi students served at the frontline of public service at Vivacity Megamall, where more than 80 participants underwent screening and consultations — a clear reflection of their growing role in health advocacy and community engagement.

The campaign was officially launched by YB Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak, and streamed live via Zoom to multiple locations including Kuching, Bintulu, Miri, Sibu, Sri Aman, and Limbang. His address stressed the urgent need for increased awareness and early detection, as Malaysia remains one of the top countries in Southeast Asia for diabetes prevalence. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019, nearly 1 in 5 Malaysian adults has diabetes, many of whom are undiagnosed and untreated.

SEGi College Sarawak students, briefed and trained by campaign organisers, took on responsibilities at registration counters and screening stations, demonstrating professionalism, empathy, and teamwork in handling participants. Their involvement did more than just support logistics; it empowered students to better understand the realities of public health issues and the importance of preventive healthcare. These hands-on learning opportunities are critical in developing socially responsible graduates ready to serve diverse communities.

The event also featured a group exercise performance to promote active living, followed by a floral presentation to the Deputy Premier — adding a celebratory note to a campaign grounded in serious purpose. Health screenings concluded at 2pm, but the impact left behind by the initiative extended well beyond the event, reflecting the value of multi-stakeholder partnerships in driving sustainable health education.

By embedding community service within student experiences, SEGi reinforces the importance of empathy, civic engagement, and leadership in higher education. These values are essential in addressing global health challenges, especially non-communicable diseases like diabetes, which account for 74% of global deaths annually, according to the World Health Organization.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 4: Quality Education
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
