The Real Reason This Charity Event Sold Out in Hours

The Kuching Life Care Society Charity Food Fair 2024 saw an outstanding display of community spirit and generosity, with SEGi College Sarawak and the Lions Club of Kuching Kota Sentosa joining forces to support those in need of medical assistance. Held on 29 September 2024 at Dewan Masyarakat Bandaraya Kuching Selatan (MBKS), the event featured 96 stalls, offering a diverse mix of food, thrift items, and handicrafts, all in the name of charity.

Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to service and compassion, six dedicated SEGi Leo members, led by Faculty Advisor and Leo Advisor Lion Vincent Cheong, actively engaged in selling food and beverages generously sponsored by Lions Club members and NGOs. The initiative aimed to raise essential funds for individuals facing financial hardship or chronic illnesses, ensuring greater access to medical care. With an estimated 100 million people pushed into extreme poverty due to out-of-pocket healthcare costs each year (source: World Health Organization), the funds raised through such efforts provide critical relief to vulnerable communities.

Beyond fundraising, the event played a significant role in promoting volunteerism and social responsibility among students. Engaging in real-world community service fosters leadership, teamwork, and empathy, all essential qualities for future professionals. Studies show that students who participate in service-learning activities are 22% more likely to develop strong civic engagement skills (source: Education Development Center). SEGi remains dedicated to inculcating these values, ensuring its students graduate as socially conscious, responsible leaders.

In recognition of this meaningful contribution, Lion Vincent Cheong received a certificate of appreciation on behalf of both the Lions Club of Kuching Kota Sentosa and SEGi College Leo Club Sarawak. The award was presented by Cr. Tan Kai, Chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council, representing YB Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government. The recognition highlights the tangible impact of student-driven initiatives, further strengthening the commitment to community-based action and collaboration.

The overwhelming support for the charity fair was evident, with SEGi’s stall completely selling out by 11am, a testament to the enthusiasm and generosity of the public. The event concluded with a group photo alongside VIPs before wrapping up at 12pm noon, marking another successful initiative in bridging education with meaningful social impact.

This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG): #SDG3 Good Health and Well-being, #SDG10 Reduced Inequalities, #SDG17 Partnerships for the Goals.
