On 8 April 2025, students from SEGi stepped into the real world of hospitality through a hands-on housekeeping training session at Damai Lagoon Resort, Kuching. This industrial exposure provided a rare opportunity to understand the meticulous standards and behind-the-scenes professionalism that define exceptional guest experiences in the hotel industry. The initiative served as both a technical training ground and a character-building experience, cultivating essential values like discipline, precision, and service excellence.
The session began with an in-depth introduction to the housekeeping department’s structure, roles, and responsibilities. Using industry-grade equipment, students explored the operational flow of maintaining guest rooms, the critical importance of hygiene protocols, and the rigorous attention to detail required to meet international standards. In a field where cleanliness can impact both customer satisfaction and health, mastering these basics is not optional—it’s vital. According to a 2023 study by Statista, 78% of hotel guests cite room cleanliness as the top factor influencing their likelihood of return (Statista).
What set this training apart was the opportunity for students to work side-by-side with seasoned professionals during the practical session. From perfecting bed-making techniques to aligning furniture with precision and inspecting for room readiness, every task demonstrated the value of teamwork and efficiency in a high-pressure hospitality environment. These real-time lessons complemented classroom knowledge, allowing students to internalise the service culture that drives the tourism and hotel sector.
Beyond technical competence, students left with a deeper respect for the labour that powers the guest experience. Housekeeping is often underappreciated, yet it remains the backbone of the hospitality industry. This exposure was a reminder that excellence in tourism isn’t just about glamorous roles—it’s about doing the fundamentals exceptionally well. The experience also aligns with Malaysia’s goal of strengthening tourism and hospitality talent pipelines to support the sector’s recovery and growth, which contributed RM238.6 billion to the economy in 2022.
SEGi Sarawak continues to ensure that students are not only academically equipped but also industry-ready, with strong values, professionalism, and practical experience. This event is organised in support of the following United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG):
Goal 4: Quality Education
Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
