STUDENTS MASTER PUBLIC SPEAKING AT TOASTMASTERS MEETING

Students from the Foundation in Business programme at SEGi College Sarawak recently had the enriching opportunity to delve into the intricacies of effective communication at the AZAM Toastmasters Club educational meeting. The event aimed to expose students to fundamental communication principles, encourage practical application, and explore methods for enhancing communication flexibility.

The educational meeting began with an introduction to the foundational principles of clear and impactful communication. This included structuring a message, vocal delivery, body language, and audience engagement. Through interactive sessions and demonstrations, participants gained insights into the elements that constitute effective communication.

The event also inspired students to apply their newfound knowledge in real-world scenarios, particularly during presentation assessments. By providing a platform for practice and feedback, students refined their communication skills in a supportive environment. Jessica and Hamidu, two of the attending students, actively participated in exercises designed to hone their presentation techniques through impromptu speech sessions.

Students were further encouraged to explore methods for adapting their communication approaches to diverse contexts and audiences. Workshops and group discussions taught strategies for tailoring messages, adjusting delivery styles, and effectively engaging with varied stakeholders. These sessions highlighted the importance of flexibility and adaptability in communication.

AZAM Toastmasters Club, established on 1 August 1994, is part of Toastmasters International, a non-profit organisation dedicated to improving public speaking and leadership skills. The club’s educational meetings, held on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month, are open to the public and offer a welcoming environment for beginners and seasoned speakers alike.

Throughout the meeting, students engaged in hands-on activities, including impromptu speaking challenges, which provided practical experience and valuable feedback from experienced Toastmasters. Jessica and Hamidu expressed their appreciation for the event, noting how it built their confidence and helped them structure their messages effectively.

The AZAM Toastmasters Club event served as a catalyst for students and the community to enhance their communication skills and confidence. By immersing themselves in practical exercises and learning from experienced communicators, participants gained invaluable insights into the art of effective communication. These lessons will undoubtedly empower them to communicate with clarity, confidence, and impact as they continue their academic journey and beyond.

The integration of such practical learning experiences aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Quality Education), ensuring that SEGi students are well-prepared for future challenges. SEGi’s commitment to providing holistic education through events like these reinforces its reputation as a leader in higher education and community engagement.
