In a powerful demonstration of the value of experiential learning and hands-on education, students from the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences at SEGi College Sarawak recently embarked on an enriching journey beyond the classroom walls.
These dedicated learners, from the profound subjects of “Inclusion in Early Childhood Education” and “Special Needs and Learning Disabilities”, came together to orchestrate an extraordinary day of happiness for the remarkable children of PERKATA, a school dedicated to special needs children. Our SEGians, along with the children’s families and the local community, curated an unforgettable experience for all in attendance. Further, the initiative was a testament to the power of industrial engagement, where the students leveraged their learning for a meaningful cause during a short semester.
With the guidance of the Early Childhood Education lecturer, Mdm. Barbara Maurice, the students crafted activities that would aid the special-needs children in honing their social and communication skills. Additionally, they played games, sang songs, and had immersive experiences that seamlessly integrated these young hearts into an inclusive circle of compassion.
The event goes beyond merely impacting the children at the special needs home; it serves as a compelling illustration of why active involvement of students pursuing Early Childhood Education and Psychology is of utmost importance. These social activities go beyond theoretical learning, instead equipping these future educators and professionals with a priceless ability to comprehend, support, and uplift children with special needs. This hands-on experience cultivates empathy, teaching them to nurture self-confidence and value in every child they encounter.
Aside from emphasising the importance of creating an inclusive and respectful environment, the event also opened the eyes of many Year-One students to a profound journey. This event epitomised SEGi College Sarawak’s unwavering commitment to fostering holistic education. Through practical experiences like this, students do not merely absorb knowledge from textbooks; they transform into catalysts for change, armed with the tools to shape a more inclusive and compassionate world.
The success of the day serves as a reminder of the ripple effect that a single act of kindness can initiate. By nurturing a sense of belonging and understanding, students at SEGi College Sarawak are actively shaping a brighter future for all children, regardless of their abilities. This event perfectly embodies the institution’s mission to nurture well-rounded, empathetic professionals who are prepared to leave an enduring impact on society.
