Shaping future leaders: Event shares secrets of effective public speaking

SEGi College Sarawak recently hosted a successful public speaking event featuring four notable speakers, the SEGi Art of Verbal Xpression. Yang Berhormat Chong Chieng Jen officiated the event, the Member of Parliament for Stampin and State Assemblyman for Padungan, who generously contributed RM 1,500 to the SEGi Public Speaking & Debating Club for the event. The event was also sponsored by Gem Consultancy Sdn Bhd, presented by its CEO Mr Clement Law.

The four speakers included a former member of the Malaysia Debating team member for the World University Debating Championship, and 10-year experienced Debating coach Lim Tai Jie, Certified Career Coach Mr Jimmy Mak Chii Ping, Sales Expert Heeranjit Singh from Coway and SEGi Law Lecturer Sathiswaran Sathiasegaran. They shared their knowledge on four topics broken into separate sessions: How To NOT Argue Like An Idiot, How To Persuade and Win Friends, The Secret to Getting Hired and Monetizing Your Skills.

In his speech, club Advisor Samuel Desmond Tuah stated the event was made due to the importance of Public Speaking and how despite various studies on how it could be beneficial to someone, such as a good public speaker is 15 – 20% more likely to be hired, 10% – 15% more likely to be promoted and on average earn over 10% than someone who does not possess the skill, it lacked events highlighting the skill. Something he said SEGi was very aware of and now intended to remedy with the formation of the SEGi Public Speaking & Debating Club.

The event was well-organized by the committee team, comprised of Phoebe Sangan, Harris Kueh, Christina Chew, Clarence Laurence, Danny Kuek, Priscilla Liew, Habrie Hafeez and Sean Tan. The event’s success highlights the importance of public speaking skills in today’s job market and the need for educational institutions to provide opportunities for students to develop these skills.

According to a survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, communication skills, including verbal communication, were ranked as the most important skills employers look for in job candidates. The SEGi Art of Verbal Xpression event allowed students to learn from experts in the field and develop their public speaking skills, which will undoubtedly benefit them in their future careers.

The SEGi Art of Verbal Xpression event was a great success, providing students with valuable insights and knowledge on public speaking and its importance in today’s job market. The event also highlighted the need for educational institutions to provide opportunities for students to develop these skills and prepare them for their future careers.
