SEGi’s SOCCD Champions Sustainability at International Art and Creative Technology Conference

The School of Communication & Creative Design (SOCCD) at SEGi College Sarawak recently showcased its commitment to sustainability at the 1st International Conference of Art & Creative Technology (IC-ACT) held in Malaysia. Organised by Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), the conference brought together a diverse group of academics, artists, and industry professionals to explore the intersection of creativity, technology, and sustainability.

A team of four SOCCD lecturers, representing both the Creative Design and Communication programmes, presented their research paper titled “The Perception of Implementing Sustainability in Communication and Creative Design Coursework on Undergraduate Students.” The paper, authored by Raden Ajeng Kartini Nazam Binti Nazam, Dr. Catherina Anak Ugap, Fathin Nur ‘Izzah Binti Mohd Taslim, Noor Izzati Nadia Binti Mohd Zainal, and Sharifah Dayana Binti Wan Abu Bakar, examined the positive impact of integrating sustainability principles into creative curricula.

The research highlighted how embedding sustainability in design and communication education empowers students to become advocates for eco-conscious practices in their future careers. By fostering an understanding of sustainable principles and encouraging creative problem-solving, SOCCD is equipping graduates to contribute to a more sustainable future.

The IC-ACT conference, themed “Achieving a Sustainable World Through Art & Creative Technology,” provided a valuable platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration. Key highlights included:

  • Diverse Participation: The event attracted a wide range of attendees, including students, academics, artists, community leaders, and policymakers, fostering a rich exchange of ideas and perspectives.
  • Focus on Sustainability: The conference emphasized the crucial role of art and creative technology in driving sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
  • Publication Opportunities: Accepted papers, including SOCCD’s research, will be published in the Conference Proceedings and may be considered for publication in indexed journals like Kupas Seni and Harmonia: Journal of Arts Research and Education.

SOCCD’s active participation in IC-ACT demonstrates its dedication to advancing sustainability within the creative industries. By sharing its research and engaging with the wider academic community, SOCCD is contributing to the global dialogue on sustainable practices in art and design education. This initiative reinforces SOCCD’s position as a leader in fostering creativity, innovation, and social responsibility within the creative sector.
